Why Employees Are Crashing Out: Navigating Stress in Today's Workplace

The Rise of Employee 'Crashing Out': A Serious Matter

In an era where TikTok videos depict humorously dramatic work-related meltdowns, the reality behind the trend is no laughing matter. An alarming number of employees are experiencing heightened stress levels that leave them feeling overwhelmed—essentially "crashing out" from their jobs. This phenomenon is particularly prevalent among younger generations, particularly Gen Z, who are vocally sharing their work struggles online.

What’s Behind the Stress?

A recent report from Owl Labs shines a light on the core issues behind this employee turmoil. An astounding 43% of full-time workers have reported an increase in their work stress over the past year, with 89% stating there hasn’t been any relief. A growing number of employees, specifically 22%, feel unfairly compensated. This feeling is magnified in the manager demographic, where nearly a third are engaged in “polyworking,” balancing multiple jobs to make ends meet. Stress levels among managers are reported to be 55% higher than their non-management counterparts.

The Flexibility Dilemma

Flexibility—or lack thereof—is another critical factor contributing to employee dissatisfaction. With a significant 50% of workers noting that in-office attendance feels unnecessary, many are longing for the autonomy that hybrid work provides. Data confirms that hybrid workers save an average of $61 by working from home, where they can also manage a healthier lifestyle. In fact, 41% of employees have claimed that losing their hybrid work privileges would compel them to seek employment elsewhere.

So What Can Employers Do?

This perfect storm of employee distress points to a greater need for firms to cultivate an inclusive workplace culture. Employers must take a hard look at employee engagement strategies that promote psychological safety and strengthen team dynamics. Engaging employees means enabling them to feel heard and fostering a sense of belonging at work.

As HR professionals, it's crucial to implement ERG support and comprehensive leadership training focused on inclusiveness. By proactively addressing these issues, organizations can not only enhance employee satisfaction but also curb the turnover rates that are becoming alarmingly common.
